Snapshot: Assessment

Updated: Mar 5, 2019

Here are just a few methods of assessment I have used in the classroom.

Checking In

What stuck with you today?

  • I frequently ask students to use sticky notes to answer a question.

  • Student initials on the top right corner.

  • I use this as an exit card and as an assessment of learning.

  • In the photo below I "checked in" on my students ability to solve a long division question. This assessment helped me to cater future lessons. ex. New division strategies (see final snapshot)

Two Dimensional Shape Pizza:

Assessment of learning: Students must create a shape pizza and provide the "recipe".

*coming soon*

Peer Assignment

Assignment as learning: reflecting and contributing the development of a peers' understanding. Students learn to give and take constructive criticism.

Peer Assessment for a Spoken Word performance in language class.

Anecdotal Notes

Recording on the spot! Here I get to observe a lot!

I created a legend to help categorize student understanding. I have a column for notes for moving forward and following up with the student.

Three Dimensional building:

Assessment of learning: To see if student can identify the and label shapes based on their properties.

One-on-one assessment

Checklist for 3D shapes

Kahoot:

Tech integration with the use of chromebooks.

Used for Math (angles, word problems, EQAO review)

Assessment for learning: See what my class understands and cater future lessons to accommodate needs.

Assessment as learning: Self-assessment so students can see where they rank. + Friendly Competition!

Progressive Assessment:

Duotang and writing journals

Tracks goals and skill development.

Daily writing journals, 15 minute writing period each day.

Began by building motivation to write.

Themed-based + sight word expectation.

Finally used writing checklist as assessment for students.

  • Will use highlighter of different colours to check writing.

  • Star** never X.

  • Tracking a Writing Continuum

Passwords:

Sight Word Daily Challenge

Assessment for/as/of learning: Each day! Simple and fun!

  • New sight words are given each week.

  • This assessment encouraged me to integrate sight words in different points of the day and use the vocabulary within multiple activities. Ex.POP

Passwords (left) + center-based activities using sight words (right)

Boards Up!

Introduced a new activity today, where students answered questions on a white boards.

This is a simple form of assessment of learning to see the depth of student understanding.

Here I taught a new long division strategy as a follow up to the long division checkin seen at the top of the page.

Rubrics and Checklists

Holistic form of evaluation.

Best created with the students.

"What should a level 4 look like?"

Language activity. Student collaborated in creating a success criteria!
